Sea Freight - USA & Canada

LCL (Less than Container Load) and FCL (Full Container Load) to / from USA and Canada via selected   shipping lines. 

Sea freight rates typically fluctuate over time. BAF (Bunker Adjustment Factor) and CAF (Currency Adjustment Factor) will normally be updated every month or at an even higher frequency. Fastlane monitor market trends and rate fluctuations, allowing us to offer good and precise freight rates to our clients. Good sea freight rates are important, however, it is just as important to be on top of the shipments as to:

  • estimated time of shipping
  • estimated time of arrival
  • correct routing as per the demand in question
  • in time presentation of relevant documents
  • correct and in time customs clearance
  • in time collection of the container in the harbour
  • in time return of the container to the harbour

In case the container is not collected in time at the harbour terminal owner of the goods will have to pay demurage to the shipping line/harbour. Similarly if the container is not returned to the harbour in time owner of the goods have to pay detention. Just to mention a couple of examples. In general time and money can be saved by precise communication and follow up. The process depends on cooperation from shipper, buyer, consignee and other influencers.

In short the best rates for container freight is obtained right timing, know how and good trading skills.  Aim is that you as a client get a  true outsourcing.

Goods are normally send in 20 ft DC (Dry Container) or 40 ft DC / HC (High Cube). We also handle sea freight in or on special equipment click 3.3.8_rev._00_Instruction_Containertypes.pdf).

Container freight do not only consists of sea freight. In both ends (shipping country and receiving country) a connecting freight is required. Which part(s) of the freight seller is to pay and which part(s) is to be paid by buyer and whom is responsible for the goods at any time during transport is described in Incoterms 2010 (click Incoterms_2010.pdf). It is recommended buyer and seller clarify for instance: 

  • who takes out insurance?
  • who pays the costs related to FOB (Free On Board ref.:  Incoterms 2010)? FOB cost typically include but not limited to: transport from shipper to the harbour, export documents, and THC (Terminal Handling Costs).
  • who pays sea freight to receiving harbour?
  • who pays reception costs. Reception costs typically consists of but is not limited to transportation cost from harbour to consignee, customs clearance and THC.
